Pursuant to the prevailing EU Road Charges Directive 1999/62/EC, road operators such as ASFINAG may impose user charges and tolls.

"The weighted average tolls shall be related to the costs of constructing, operating and developing the infrastructure network concerned" (EU Road Charges Directive 1999/62/EC, Article 7 (9)).

Together with the Federal Ministry of Transportation, Innovation and Technology (BMVIT) and a working group including international experts, a simple system was developed which reflects the ‘user pays’ principle:

The greater amount of wear and tear on the road infrastructure caused by multiple axle vehicles resulted in gradation of the rates into three categories: vehicles with 2 axles pay EUR 0.158/km (category 2), vehicles with 3 axles pay EUR 0.2212/km (category 3) and vehicles with 4 or more axles pay EUR 0.3318/km (category 4), all rates excl. 20% VAT. This system is simple and fair: every vehicles pays in accordance with the use on the road.

These regulations apply to all vehicles (trucks, buses and heavy motor homes) over 3.5 t maximum gross weight, whereby the number of axles on trailers is not taken into consideration in categorizing buses and heavy motorhomes.

New toll tariffs (valid from Mai 1, 2008)

all rates above excl. 20% VAT

Special toll routes

For special routes, i.e. road sections which involve above-average costs for construction, expansion and structural and operational maintenance, increased toll rates per kilometre apply (rates excl. 20% VAT, kilometre numbers are rounded off):

*) Travelling north the collection of tolls is carried out on the Slovenian side of the border.
**) On the A13 motorway a night toll rate applies for Category 4 trucks between 10:00 p.m. and 05:00 a.m.. The night rate is double the amount of the day rate.

Night toll rate

The time registered in the toll system at the time the vehicle passes the appropriate toll collection  point is decisive when it comes to determining wheter the night-time rate applies (the time on the radio-controlled clock is used as a reference).

Registered owners of vehicles in category 4, to which the night-time rate on the A13 does not apply, but for which toll is collected for technical reasons, may apply to have the difference between the night-time rate and the normal rate refunded within six months of travelling on the toll road section in question. The application form is available from A13 Schönberg main toll point.

Situation at the existing toll sites (special toll routes)

Tolls are collected as usual for category 1 vehicles (cars and motorcycles) at the six existing toll sites and the ancillary toll sites. For vehicles falling into categories 2 to 4 (for more information on classification of vehicles please see the diagram above), the toll sites function as control sites. If no problems are detected, the vehicles can pass the toll site without having to stop.

Rates for individual toll routes

Please refer to the following tables for the rates on the individual toll routes for Austria’s motorways and expressways. The main determinant factors for the amount of toll levied for the routes is the distance (number of kilometres) and the category of the vehicle, which is determined on the basis of the number of axles.

The distance-related toll applies to all vehicles over 3.5 t maximum gross weight.
For category 4 trucks, a higher toll is charged on the A13 between the junction Innsbruck Amras / Innsbruck Wilten and the Austrian border at the Brenner between 10:00 p.m and 05:00 a.m.; for all other routes the tolls indicated in the table apply 24 hours a day.

If you wish to calculate the tolls charged for specific routes exactly and easily, please use the user-friendly toll calculator which can be found on the GO homepage at http://www.go-maut.at/go/.

An example: A truck driver from Vienna drives his 2-axle truck (14 t maximum gross weight) from Vienna Auhof to Böheimkirchen, drops off his tandem-axle trailer there and then drives back to Vienna without the trailer.

  • Category classification:
As a truck over 3.5 ts maximum gross weight, the vehicle is subject to the distance-related toll. In respect of the classification of the vehicle’s category, the main factor is the number of axles, whereby the number of axles on the vehicle’s trailer also counts. The classification of the tandem axle as "2 separate axles" is based on the regulations set forth in the Federal Road Toll Act of 2002 (BStMG).
Tractor vehicle with 2 axles = category 2
Tractor vehicle with 2 axles and trailer with 2 axles (or tandem-axle trailer) = category 4
  • Toll rate for first leg of the journey (category 4):
The following amounts (excl. 20% VAT) from the table can be taken as a guideline for the tolls charged on the sections of the route:
    Wien-Auhof – Pressbaum EUR   4,62
Pressbaum – Knoten Steinhäusl EUR   2,61
    Knoten Steinhäusl – AltlengbachEUR   1,54
    Altlengbach – St. ChristophenEUR   1,83
    St. Christophen – BöheimkirchenEUR   2,20
Toll charged for the entire route: EUR 12,80
  • Toll rate for return leg of the journey (Category 2):
The following amounts (excl. 20% VAT) from the table can be taken as a guideline for the tolls charged on the sections of the route:
    Böheimkirchen – St. ChristophenEUR  1,05
    St. Christophen – AltlengbachEUR  0,87
    Altlengbach – Knoten SteinhäuslEUR  0,73
    Knoten Steinhäusl – PressbaumEUR  1,24
Pressbaum – Wien Auhof EUR  2,20
Toll charged for the entire route: EUR 6,09

The toll charges due in our example thus amount to
    EUR 18.89 (excluding 20% VAT).
